GERMANTOWN HISTEP PRESENTS: BEAUTY FOR DAYS

The young women in Germantown have been discovering the meaning of true beauty throughout the school year and as we approach the final days of programming they are learning that true beauty comes from the inside.  The ladies have been working with Fashion Specialists, Ms. Chataqua, to learn new make-up techniques that will allow them to bring their natural beauty out.

"I used to be nervous in front of the camera because I did not think I was pretty, but now I know I am beautiful and I love to see myself in pictures."-- Germantown HiSTEP Participant, Venise (10th grade).

"I'm so happy I have learned these new make-up techniques from Ms. Chataqua, now I can share them with my friends"  -- Germantown HiSTEP Participant, Aaliyah (9th grade).

"I have literally watched myself grow into a beautiful young adult this year, I look at my pictures from the beginning of the school year and I can see how much more confident I am in myself now. Now I can walk with my head held high everyday." -Germantown HiSTEP Participant, Moenisha (10th grade)

While the ladies have been doing self-esteem exercises throughout the school year with their  beauty coaches Ms. Kendra, Ms. Jenielle and Antwoin, there is no doubt that Ms Chataqua has come at the perfect time to encourage the young ladies to completely come out of their shell and embrace their natural beauty.

South Philly HiSTEP: Creative Writing

A few weeks ago Ms. Alisha joined the Southern family and began her Creative Writing project. There are several poets, spoken word artists and song writers here at Southern so this was the perfect end of year project!

Every Monday and Wednesday participants from CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) , GAMP (Girard Academic Music Program), BOK (Edward W. Bok Technical High School) and Southern High schools gather to bring out their creative sides. Besides writing and performing their own work to warm up the group and get the creative juices flowing students do different ice breakers. One of the current favorites has to be analyzing song lyrics, Ms. Alisha hands out lyrics of new and old songs and the debates ensue. Another favorite for the group is free expression exercises, the students are asked to pick a word and then write a poem, short story, song or whatever they feel. Afterwards if they are up to it they are asked to read their creation. Below are pictures of the group meeting in the EW room and out in the hall having a BLAST!

SOUTH PHILLY HISTEP PRESENTS: THE ULTIMATUM

This is a movie written, produced and edited by South Philadelphia HiSTEP Video Production Crew.  The film is based on actual events that students have witnessed or personally experienced.  The message that the students want to convey to their audience is "trust the voice within."

GERMANTOWN MUSIC/VIDEO PRODUCTION PRESENTS: SAMARA AKA YOUNG RED-DO YOU CARE?

My name is Samara...

I would like to share my debut song and video "Do You Care?" with you'll.  I started writing my song because I was feeling a type of way about someone and I was at a difficult point in my life.  When I started going to the studio, I found a way to express myself using my talents.

That's when I met Mr. Margel and I let him hear my song and he wanted to start working with me immediately.  It did not take long before I was performing the song at events, I could not believe how fast we finished the song.

I came up with the concept of the video and shared it with Ms. Jenielle and she helped me do my video for my song.  At the end it all worked out and my video took a min to process and the song final for the video with my dancing involved to incorporate everything that I can do.

I am really grateful for my peer, Slaughter who made the beat for my song and helped bring it to life.  I also want to thank everyone who contributed to this project, especially my choreographer and friend Donny Baker.  Overall I had a good time and I learned a lot about myself and I have more confidence in my talents.

Here is my video, I hope you enjoy.
